Week on, week off custody schedule
In a week on, week off schedule (also called alternating weeks or 7-7), the kids spend a full week with one parent, then a full week with the other. It is a 50/50 schedule with one change a week, usually on the same day each time.

From October 26, 2026 to October 25, 2027: 183 nights with Parent A and 182 nights with Parent B (50.1% and 49.9%), before holidays.
How it works
- Week one: all seven nights with Parent A.
- Week two: all seven nights with Parent B.
- The change usually happens on the same day every week. Friday after school and Monday morning are common.
7 of 14 nights with each parent2 changes every two weeks
Common variations
- With a midweek visit
- The parent who is off that week has a dinner or one night in the middle of the week, so nobody goes a whole week without seeing the kids.
- Changing on a different day
- A Friday change gives each parent a full weekend at the start of their week. A Monday change means school drop-off and pick-up handle the exchange.
Things families weigh
- It has the fewest changes of the 50/50 schedules: one a week.
- Each parent goes seven nights without the kids, unless a midweek visit is added.
- It’s the easiest schedule to remember, since the only question is whose week it is.
- A midweek dinner adds no overnight, so the split stays 50/50.

Questions
Is week on, week off 50/50?
Yes. Each parent has 7 of every 14 nights, or 182 or 183 a year before holidays.
What day should the week change on?
Any day works. Families often pick Friday after school or Monday at school drop-off so the change happens without a face-to-face exchange. The calendar lets you start on any day.
How do holidays work with alternating weeks?
Holidays replace the regular nights for their dates. The weeks keep counting underneath, so the rotation is where it would have been once the holiday ends.
